Ahead of next month’s oral cancer awareness month, the British Dental Health Foundation (BDHF) has praised the decision to ban cigarette machines. Recently, Members of Parliament voted to banish cigarette machines; it is hoped that this ban will prevent children from getting hold of cigarettes and will help to discourage those who already smoke.
The vote comes in light of recent shocking figures relating to mouth cancer; according to the British Dental Foundation the disease is now responsible for one death every five hours in Great Britain and is much more prevalent than just a decade ago.
The British Dental Foundation is urging people to attend regular check-ups with their dentist; early diagnosis can increase the chances of survival by up to 90% and will promote good oral health. In addition to this, the organisation is keen to make people aware of the importance of lifestyle choices; coupled with Government initiatives, the BDHF is hoping to alter the way people live and subsequently improve their quality of life and increase their life expectancy.
The Mouth Cancer Action Month campaign will encourage people to be active and healthy, in addition to offering practical advice and support for those wishing to stop smoking.
Further research is being carried out with reference to new proposals concerning the branding and advertisement of cigarettes; the laws are expected to be tightened in the near future.
