Brechin Father Urges People to get Checked out during Mouth Cancer Action Month

Sample News Big

A Brechin father has urged people to get involved in Mouth Cancer Action Month and get checked out after being diagnosed with the disease.

Harry Angus, a 37-year-old painter and part-time fire fighter visited his dentist to get an ulcer checked out and was then found to have a cancerous lump. A short time after his check-up, Harry was receiving surgery in Ninewells Hospital to have the swelling removed from his tongue.

Harry had trouble speaking and eating for weeks after the operation, but he is now back at work and wants to encourage everyone to get checked out during November. Mouth Cancer Action Month is being celebrated across the UK and dentists all over the country are offering free cancer screening sessions

The campaign, which is run by the British Dental Health Foundation, aims to raise awareness of oral cancer and encourage as any people as possible to attend a screening examination. The test is very short and simple and there will be no pain involved and could potentially save your life.

Harry said that he would encourage anyone who is worried about an ulcer or has noticed changes in their mouth to see their dentist, as what he thought was just a troublesome ulcer could have killed him if he had delayed visiting his dentist, something he does not want this to happen to other people. Other signs to look out for include white or red patches in the mouth and abnormal swellings in the throat or mouth.
