Breast implant saves woman’s life

A woman who was shot in the chest at Los Angeles dental clinic was saved by her breast implants.

Lydia Carranza, a mother of three and grandmother of two, was shot twice at Simi Valley dental office by Jaime Paredes, who also shot several other bystanders.

Reports have suggested that Paredes was targeting his wife, who was trying to divorce him.

He shot her and her brother, who both worked at the dental clinic, killing his wife.

Dr Ashkan Ghavami, plastic surgeon, said that Carranza, who was also shot in the arm, was a lucky woman and that he would be repairing her breast for free.

He also claimed that the breast implant had saved Carranza’s life as it had stopped bullet fragments from reaching her heart and vital organs.

Los Angeles Police Department firearms instructor Scott Reitz, an expert with more than 30 years experience, said that the implant could well have saved Carranza’s life as it will have interrupted the velocity of the bullet.

Reitz added that implants are not as effective a bullet-proof vests but said that because they are often denser than flesh they do afford some extra protection to chests.
