Brave Dentist Faces Sharks to Raise Money for Charity

A dentist from Stafford came face to face with one of nature’s most dangerous creatures to raise money for charity.

Richard Haworth braved a tank full of sharks at Ellesmere Port’s Blue Planet Aquarium, armed only with a toothbrush, to raise money for a good cause. Richard decided to take the plunge to raise money for a charity that he founded called Dental Mavericks. The charity provides much-needed dental care for people living in poor communities in Morocco.

Last year Richard ran a half marathon to raise funds for the charity and the sponsorship money was used to buy dental chairs for a clinic in the remote village of El Jebah in the North East of Morocco.

Richard’s latest charity venture, the shark dive, will raise money to fund a solar-powered dental chair, which will enable dentists to provide a wider range of dental treatments.

The charity is also hoping to raise money to buy a dental ambulance, which will provide dental care in rural areas. The charity is also planning to start working in Senegal.

Richard said that idea for the dive had come from a patient. The brave dentist joked that he thought it was a means of dental patients getting their own back and letting their dentist come face to face with a shark bearing razor-sharp teeth.
