Bradford dental practice to take part in pilot programme

A Bradford dental practice is to take part in a pilot programme to try and improve standards of primary care across the country.

The Rayner and Rayner Dental Practice in Wibsey beat more than five hundred other dental practices to participate in the scheme, which is being run by the Department of Health. The practice is one of eight practices in the Yorkshire and Humber region taking part in the pilot scheme. As part of the programme, the practice will investigate how complex dental procedures are provided and paid for in the primary care environment.

The primary aim of the scheme is to try and shift the focus of NHS dental care to preventative treatment; preventive treatment will reduce costs and improve standards of oral health across the country in the long-term. Another goal is to try and promote good oral health; ministers are hoping to try and prevent people from visiting the dentist only when they have an existing dental problem.

Alison Rayner, one of the three dentists at the practice, said that staff were delighted to be taking part in the scheme. The pilot programme will enable the practice to build on their foundation of preventative care and increase the range of services available to patients to try and prevent oral health problems, rather than focusing on curing existing problems. In addition to providing preventative treatments, staff are also keen to take more time to talk to patients about oral hygiene and lifestyle factors to try and promote good oral health.
