A recent survey has revealed that almost half of children in Bolton have tooth decay.

The poll also confirmed that parents find it very difficult to get their children to brush their teeth, with half of participating parents with children aged between five and 12 years old admitting that they find it stressful trying to get their child to clean their teeth.

One in seven mothers admitted that their child has at least 3 fillings and 20 per cent of respondents said that their child does not brush their teeth twice a day.

The survey also revealed that 1 in 50 mothers have a child with gum disease, which usually only affects adults and 1 in have a child with more than four fillings.

Tina Tanna, a dentist who is currently working with Aquafresh, said that figures are worrying, especially as decay is preventable. Tanna said that it is difficult for parents to get their child to brush their teeth twice a day, but the results of the survey show how important oral hygiene is. Tanna recommends making teeth cleaning fun and using children’s oral hygiene products to get them more interested in brushing their teeth.

Tooth decay is one of the UK’s most common preventable illnesses and the situation among children is alarming; dentists across the country have reported seeing an increase in the number of young children needing dental care and this is due to poor diet, increase consumption of sugary and sweet foods and poor oral hygiene.
