Blackburn Rovers Community Trust launches campaign to help children reduce sugar consumption

Blackburn Rovers Community Trust has teamed up with Blackburn with Darwen Council, Healthy Stadia and Food Active to encourage local children to adopt healthier eating habits.

The main focus of the campaign is to help children and parents to cut down on sugary drinks and pop. The Give Up Loving Pop initiative will challenge children and their parents to give up fizzy drinks for 21 days and provide access to coaching and educational games and activities.

The organisations will be working together to raise awareness of the potential health implications of consuming a lot of sugar and highlighting healthier alternatives.

Research indicates many children, teens and adults get a large proportion of the added sugars they consume from sugary drinks. A diet high in sugar can increase the risk of obesity, tooth decay and type 2 diabetes.

Blackburn with Darwen has one of the highest rates of dental decay among 5-year-olds in the country. Over 50% of children have at least one missing, filled or decayed tooth at this age in the town.

As part of the council’s oral health programme, coaches from Blackburn Rovers Community Trust will be visiting 40 year 3 classes in the region to promote the Give Up Loving Pop campaign and get kids involved in activities and games.

It is hoped that raising awareness of health problems linked to excessive sugar consumption and encouraging children to drink more water will help to bring rates of tooth decay down.
