Birmingham’s new state of the art dental hospital is officially open to the public. The brand new facility, which is combined with a world-class dental school, has played host to its first patients.

The new hospital and dental school, which is part of the University of Birmingham, have been constructed in Edgbaston on the Pebble Mill site, which was previously occupied by the BBC. It was officially opened by The Queen four months ago, but the first patients visited yesterday (31/03/16).

Pebble Mill closed down in 2004 and the site offered the perfect opportunity for the university to create a brand new learning centre with direct access to a state of the art dental hospital. The site is the first combined hospital and learning centre to open in the last 40 years, and everyone involved is incredibly excited about the venture. Students from Birmingham will now be able to train and develop in a world-class setting, and the patients will have access to the finest care in a modern, purpose-built facility.

Experts believe that more than 120,000 patients per year will receive treatment at the hospital, which offers a wide range of speciality dental services. The four storey building features departments of restorative dentistry, oral surgery, paediatric care and orthodontics. More than 600 students will make use of the facilities.

The facilities are a welcome addition to Birmingham’s Medical Quarter, which also houses the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the Women’s Hospital.
