Professor Iain Chapple, from the University of Birmingham, has received an MBE in the New Year’s Honours List.

Prof Chapple, a professor of Periodontology and former head of the university’s School of Dentistry, has been awarded the honour for services to oral and dental health.

A world-renowned researcher, Prof Chapple graduated from Newcastle University before completing his PhD at the University of Birmingham. He has had more than 240 articles published and in 2018, he received the prestigious International Association of Dental Research Distinguished Scientist Award.

The award recognised Prof Chapple’s research into periodontal disease and was particularly impressive, as he became only the third UK dentist to receive the honour.

In 2021, Prof Chapple was named the first UK winner of the European Federation of Periodontology’s 2022 Eminence Award.

Speaking about his MBE, Prof Chapple said that he was “truly delighted” and added that he had been “enormously privileged to work with fantastic teams in Birmingham, nationally and internationally.” The honour, he explained, underlined the importance of preventing oral disease within society.

Prof Chapple is currently the Head of Research at the Institute of Clinical Sciences at the University of Birmingham and he also works as a consultant in Restorative Dentistry at Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.
