The British Dental Association in Northern Ireland is demanding an apology from Belfast Telegraph after claims that it exaggerated statistics.

According to the association (BDA), the newspaper grossly embellished figures about dentists’ NHS incomes in a report on 11 December 2009.

BDA claimed that Belfast Telegraph published six incorrect statistics out of the 20 highlighted in the article and exaggerated dental practice NHS turnovers by as much as 73 per cent.

Claudette Christie, director of the Northern Irish wing of BDA, said that the report had caused distress to many hardworking dentists and to the profession as a whole.

She claimed that dentist’s across Northern Ireland were working hard to in the heart of communities to serve their patients and that personal relationships, which had been built-up over a number of years, had been damaged.

Calling for a retraction of the report, Ms Christie revealed that BDA had written to Business Services Organisation, the body responsible for the release of the incorrect figures, about the issue.
