BDA to Host New Oral Cancer Training Event

The British Dental Association is hosting a new oral cancer training event, which is designed to train dentists to detect pre-cancerous signs and prevent dentists being involved in convoluted legal cases.

The training event is designed to put a stop to the legal cases being brought against dentists who have missed symptoms of oral cancer. In recent years the number of dentists involved in these cases has increased.

The one-day training course is designed to enable dentists to spot early warning signs of oral cancer and will be hosted by clinical experts, Richard Cook, senior lecturer in Oral Medicine at King’s College London and Saman Warnakulasuriya, professor of Oral Medicine at King’s College London.

The course will be held on the 25th November and another event has already been planned for the 29th June. The first course will coincide with the national Mouth Cancer Action Month campaign, which is designed to raise awareness of oral cancer and encourage people to look out for signs and symptoms.

The event will take place at the BDA’s headquarters on Wimpole Street in London and is designed to help both dentists and patients. The course is tailored to the whole dental team and will highlight the responsibility of the dental team and teach dentists how to carry out a head and neck examination. Advice will also be available on how to approach the subject with patients, how to reduce the risk of oral cancer and the referral process for patients who have symptoms of oral cancer.
