The British Dental Association Museum is close to capturing a rare oil painting, it has been revealed.

Members of staff from the museum are working hard to secure the painting, which features dentist, Conrad Ackner treating the artist’s wife. The painting is by Sir John Lavery and dates back to 1929.

The painting is significant because it is regarded as the only accurate depiction of an early 20th century dentist at work and Sir John Lavery is one the best-known portrait artists of the time.

The BDA museum is planning to use the painting as a focal point for an exhibition, which will feature a scrapbook compiled by Conrad Acker’s staff; the book lists Marlene Dietrich and the King of Norway amongst Ackner’s clients.

The BDA is currently trying to raise funds to secure the acquisition; the painting has been valued at £60,000. Currently, the BDA is £9,000 short of the asking price.
