Two local dental practices will take over dental services previously provided at Barry Hospital, it has been confirmed.

Two community clinics will take over high street services that were previously offered at the hospital. Both surgeries are within 1.5 miles of the hospital. Specialist community services for vulnerable patients and those requiring special care will continue to run at Barry Hospital.

Patients who have been treated at the hospital’s dental department in recent years have been sent a letter informing them of the changes and providing them with information to arrange appointments at the new practices. Patients who have been treated at the hospital will be given priority access to services at the new providers.

David Oliver, primary care support manager at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, said there was an opportunity to review dental services in Barry when the dentist who was based at the hospital retired. A tendering process revealed two suitable local clinics that will take over high street services previously offered at the hospital. Patients now have a choice of where they want to receive treatment and funding has not been reduced in Barry. Access to services should also improve, as more dentists will be available to treat the same number of patients.
