A dental nurse from Barnsley was given the VIP treatment on a recent visit to Yorkshire Wildlife Park, near Doncaster. Gill Russell was named the park’s one millionth visitor and given a special prize to mark the landmark celebration.

Gill has travelled to the park with her mother and son for a day out during the Easter holidays and was delighted to learn that she would be treated to a VIP package in celebration of the fact that she was the one millionth visitor to walk through the gates.

Gill said that she could not believe her luck, especially as it was the first time the family had visited the wildlife park, she said that everyone had a great day, especially her son, Ben.

The Yorkshire Wildlife Park only opened in 2008 and visitor numbers have steadily increased over the years. In the first year, around 60,000 visitors turned up to see the animals, which numbers rising to 353,000 last year. The park has expanded beyond belief, turning from a small farm to a large-scale park, with a huge range of animals, from a petting zoo with sheep and goats to a pride of lions.

Gill said that she loved the whole day but was particularly fond of the wallabies, while Ben was a big fan of the meerkats. The family is looking forward to their next trip.

Park director, Cheryl Williams, said that it was an amazing achievement to celebrating the one millionth visitor so soon after opening and it seemed right to treat that customer to a special prize.
