Children visiting Barnsley Central Library next week will be encouraged to learn about oral health as part of National Smile Month.

To celebrate the annual oral health campaign, the library will be hosting an oral health awareness day, which will take place on Tuesday 29th May. There will be a stand inside the library, which will be attended by members of the Barnsley Community Dental Service.

Members of the service will be chatting to children and adults about the importance of oral hygiene, good oral hygiene habits and techniques and healthy eating to try and encourage children to look after their teeth and gums. Toothpaste and toothbrushes will be given away during the day, while stocks last.

National Smile Month is an annual campaign run by the British Dental Health Foundation to raise awareness of the importance of oral health and encourage better oral hygiene habits.

Recent figures show that more than 3 in 5 adults visit a dentist on a regular basis, however 1 in 10 people are still not registered with a dentist in the UK and therefore there is still a way to go.

Martin Farran, executive director for adult and community services for Barnsley Council, said that libraries in Barnsley are happy to be supporting this worthy cause and added that he is encouraging as many people as possible to visit the stand next week.
