Three dental practices in Ayrshire have joined Clyde Munro’s mission to provide 1,000 children with fluoride varnish treatment.

The teams at the Art of Dentistry in Prestwick and Sandgate Dentistry and Alloway Place Dental Care in Ayr are working with dentists across the Clyde Munro network in Scotland to offer free fluoride varnish services for children. The scheme has been set up to try to clear backlogs and ensure that young people have access to preventative care.

Fluoride varnish treatment is offered free of charge for children across the UK, but the pandemic meant that many children had to go without. Cancelled appointments, clinic closures and restrictions on appointment numbers disrupted fluoride varnish programmes.

Clyde Munro has launched the scheme to enable more children to benefit from fluoride varnish. Clinics will be offering appointments for children outside of normal working hours. The goal is to treat 1,000 children by the end of the year.

Statistics show that appointment numbers fell by 850,000 during the pandemic and only 55% of children in deprived areas have seen a dentist in the last two years.

Dentist and clinical director at Clyde Munro, Jacqui Frederick, said that dentists were increasingly concerned about the provision of preventative treatment for children. The group wants to be part of the post-pandemic “fightback.”
Participating Clyde Munro practices will be running sessions for children outside of working hours to boost patient numbers and protect children.

Fluoride varnish is applied to the teeth in a quick and painless procedure. Fluoride strengthens the enamel, reducing the risk of dental decay.
