A dental nurse from Ayr came to the rescue of a fellow passenger on board a flight to Tenerife recently.

Dental nurse Lucy Anderson volunteered to help when a plea was made by the captain on board the Ryanair flight. A man had collapsed and Lucy was compelled to stand up and make her way down the plane when nobody else offered to assist. Lucy had been waiting to see if there any doctors or nurses on board. When nobody come forward she offered to help, making her way to the elderly man, who was unconscious but sweating profusely.

With the help of the crew, 23 year old Lucy moved the man onto his side and gave him oxygen. As there were no face masks available, Lucy used a funnel to channel oxygen into the man’s mouth, all the while offering him and his wife reassurance. When the captain asked if he should divert the flight and land in nearby Dublin, Lucy didn’t hesitate, knowing that he would be best off in a hospital setting with all the best equipment and expert care. She suspected that the passenger had suffered a heart attack and would benefit from immediate help and follow-up care on the ground.

When the plane landed in Dublin, medics arrived straightaway. Shortly after, the flight took off again, bound for Tenerife, and Lucy met up with her parents who were already out there. As she disembarked, many of the passengers and crew members thanked her and praised her quick thinking and kindness.

A couple of days into her holiday, Lucy received a message from the pilot thanking her and telling her than she had saved a life. Lucy was also contacted by the elderly man’s grand-daughter on Facebook and she confirmed that he was at home recovering well.
