A 48 year old author from Sarnia in Canada hopes to help children that feel about over visiting the dentist with her first book ‘Chico’s First Trip to the Dentist’.

Jen Dafoe has undergone 38 surgeries, 5 of which were brain surgeries, and so is no stranger to the anxiety of visiting a doctor.

‘Chico’s First Trip to the Dentist’ is about a puppy called Chico, who is based on the author’s friend’s dog of the same name. The story aims to explain to children what to expect from their first dental visit, and ease any dental phobia they may be experiencing.

Since childhood, Dafoe has experienced ongoing visits to health facilities. She noticed that a lot of children were suffering with anxieties and stresses when visiting doctors and dentists, so decided to write a series of children’s books about how to decrease the anxiety of upcoming medical appointments.

Dafoe wants children to be aware that medical professionals are good people that want to help, rather than hurt, them.

She plans to follow ‘Chico’s First Trip to the Dentist’ with books about Chico’s first trip to the hospital, a trip to the eye doctor and visits to various other health professionals.
