Australian dentist gives Kenyan people something to smile about

Sample News Big

A dentist from Alexandra Hills, Australia, has completed a successful trip to help people in Kenya.

Debbie Leong was accompanied by three colleagues on her trip to the highlands of Nyahururu; during the short visit, the team helped more than one thousand people. Debbie Leong said she was delighted with the reaction of the people, who were incredibly grateful for the team’s help and rewarded them with broad, warm smiles.

People living in the area have very poor standards of oral health and access to dental services is minimal; the team from Alexandra Hills gave out more than a thousand toothbrushes and helped people by giving them routine dental treatments, including fillings and tooth extractions. The team set up a makeshift camp, using basic equipment; they trekked tirelessly with heavy bags and boxes of dental supplies for more than four hours to reach their destination with the aim of helping the poor and needy. The team also worked at the Heroes of the Nation orphanage, where they cared for children orphaned by HIV, illness and warfare.

General standards of health are also poor in the region; many people suffer from altitude sickness, as the town is situated at 760 metres above sea level. The team’s visit has made a huge difference to the people of Nyahururu and the volunteers are grateful for a life-changing experience.
