A dental team from Ashby de la Zouch is taking on a mammoth challenge to raise money as part of Mouth Cancer Action Month.

During November, the team at Tg’s Dental Suite will be walking to raise awareness of mouth cancer. The goal is complete the 500 Miles for Smiles challenge. Each day, a member of staff will be donning a Mouth Cancer Action Month t-shirt and pounding the pavements to raise awareness of mouth cancer and encourage people to donate to the campaign, which is run by the Mouth Cancer Foundation and the Oral Health Foundation.

The aim of the 500 Miles for Smiles challenge is to make people aware of the symptoms and causes of mouth cancer and urge them to attend regular dental appointments and screening sessions. While they walk, the team members will be stopping to talk to people about the cause and spread the word. To make an impact, the staff will be wearing special t-shirts and blue stick-on lips.

Mouth cancer has become increasingly prevalent in the UK in the last decade, but most people are still unaware of the main risk factors and symptoms. During routine check-ups, dentists screen for abnormal and suspicious symptoms, but there are fears that thousands of cases could be missed or detected at an advanced stage due to a shortage of NHS dental appointments. Awareness campaigns are therefore more important than ever.

Throughout November, which is Mouth Cancer Action Month, practices across the country will be participating in fundraising events and raising awareness of the deadly disease to try to ensure that as many cases as possible can be prevented or detected at an early stage.
