An apprentice dental nurse is all smiles after winning the Greater Birmingham Apprentice of the Year 2022 award.
Summar Wilkes, 18, won the award in the Health, Education and Care category before beating five other category winners to scoop the overall Apprentice of the Year gong. Summar works at Smile Style Dental Centre in Stafford and is due to complete her apprenticeship in spring 2023.
The judges chose Summar because she is doing an incredible job at the practice while also balancing studying and caring for her mum. She has had to juggle studying, working and looking after her mum and has gone about the task with great maturity, according to the panel. Her training provider, Performance Through People, also highlighted her dedication and commitment to training and her strength to give everything 100%.
Summar said that she was “overwhelmed” by the awards and delighted to win them at what has been a difficult time. As well as studying and working at the practice, she cares for her mother, who is ill, which she described as “quite challenging at times.”
Her ambition is to qualify as a dental nurse and then specialise in orthodontics. She added that she loves learning on the job and finds it “more helpful” than studying in a classroom.
