Ann Arbor student gets new scholarship

An Ann Arbor woman has become the first student to receive a special new scholarship.

Dr. Daylene Jack-Min Leong, who is in her second year of residency at University of Michigan’s (UoM) School of Dentistry, will be the first to benefit from the Benson Duff Endowed Graduate Periodontics Scholarship.

It will help Dr Leong to finance and complete her masters studies in periodontics.

Dr Benson Duff, now deceased, earned a bachelor’s biology degree from UoM in 1975, and went on to gain a degree in dentistry from the university five years later and a masters in periodontics in 1988.

Dr Duff worked in private practice while also acting as an associate of the Michigan Periodontal Alumni Board and the Dean’s Faculty before he died in 2008.

Sheree, Dr Duff’s wife and an associate dental dean herself, set up the scholarship with a $60,000 donation.

This gift was then matched by UoM’s Donor Challenge Program, which managed to raise more than $1million.

Dr Leong came to UoM July 2008 and said that she felt overwhelmed when she found out that she had been awarded the scholarship.

Her eventual aim, after completing her masters, is to become an authority in the profession.
