Aldo the therapy dog helps children to relax at Quito dental clinic
A therapy dog from Quito, Ecuador has gone viral online after helping children to stay calm during visits to the dentist.
Aldo, a Golden Labrador, is based at Parque Dental in Quito. The clinic specialises in paediatric dentistry and has become world famous due to its cuddly, cute team member. Aldo sits and lies with children while they are in the dental chair and eases nerves before treatment. His presence helps to distract patients and provides a sense of security in what can be a daunting environment for kids.
Aldo has proven to be an incredibly popular addition to the Parque Dental Team and he has really made a difference to patients, staff and parents. Studies show that almost half of children under the age of 9 in Ecuador have signs of decay, which means that many need treatment, such as fillings or extractions. With Aldo by their side, children feel more relaxed and they enjoy the experience of going to the dentist much more.
Aldo is specially trained and he is very gentle and patient with children of all ages. He greets them with a warm welcome and is often seen in the reception area being showered with cuddles by children on their way home having spent time with patients in the dental chair to soothe them during their appointment.
Therapy dogs have become an increasingly common feature of dental clinics, especially those that cater to children and patients with additional needs. Many people feel anxious when they go to the dentist. Having a furry friend by their side can help them to focus on something other than drills and injections and change the perception they have of seeing a dentist.
The team at Parque Dental claims that Aldo makes children feel less anxious and nervous and encourages them to feel more confident and self-assured.
