The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry says that some foods can clean and protect the teeth and even make them appear whiter. Certain foods can fight harmful bacteria and stop it affecting your teeth and gums.

Dr.Shawn Frawley, part of the AACD and a cosmetic dentist says “The teeth and gums mirror what’s going on in the rest of your body. Therefore, what you consume influences the health of your smile,” In contrast, some foods and lifestyle habits such as drinking coffee and tea as well as smoking can cause discoloration or the yellowing of your teeth. “

Most people would like to improve on the aesthetics and health of their teeth and therefore any foods which can help look after the teeth are worth introducing into the diet. The AACD have advised on ten food items they believe will assist in looking after a person’s teeth and mouth health.

The list includes carrots which have Vitamin A that fights tooth enamel and by having them uncooked you can produce extra saliva to naturally clean the teeth. Interestingly cheese is also on the list as it is full of calcium which is great for the teeth and bones and also contains protein which hinders acid production within the mouth. As great amounts of cheese can be unhealthy, a lower-fat alternative is preferred. The list also contains things such as ginger, basil and onions for increased oral health.
