Laser Treatment Holds the Key for Gum Disease Sufferers

Sample News Big

Gum disease is incredibly common, with up to 90 percent of people expected to experience a bout of the condition at some point in their lives and 10 percent of people classed as ‘susceptible’ to the disease.

Treatment for advanced gum disease is usually very complex and requires several appointments over a long period of time, often involving surgical procedures under anaesthetic. However, thanks to advances in laser technology, a new treatment, which does not involve invasive surgery or anaesthetic, could provide a highly effective alternative to traditional methods.

WaterLase, a treatment that uses both water and laser technology, can be used to treat periodontal problems and periodontitis, the most advanced form of gum disease. The treatment procedure involves spraying water and air through a hand-piece at the same time as the laser beams are directed towards the mouth. The treatment works because the lasers cause the molecules of water to explode, destroying diseased tissue, which is then removed. The lasers do not come into contact with the body and the procedure is painless, eliminating the need for anaesthetic.

In addition to treating periodontitis, WaterLase can also be used for a number of other applications, including tooth whitening, sensitivity treatment, the removal of decayed tooth tissue and extractions.
