The University of Utah has been awarded $30million to fund the state’s first dental school but officials are hesitant about going ahead with plans.

University (UoU) leaders don’t want to commit to going ahead with plans without the financial backing of the state.

Other dentists are also saying that the state, which has a surplus of dental practitioners, doesn’t need the dental school.

The UoU say that the new school would cost state around $2 million a year to maintain the dental school – which is a huge figure considering the state has said that it wants to cut higher education spending by five per cent.

Gov Gary Herbert has proposed a budget which authorizes the use $37million-worth institutional funds but will not offer any state money sustain it.

The university said it was delighted by the donation but added that they had to be realistic about finances.

Both parties agree that there is no point in building a second-rate dental school and they want the people of Utah to benefit significantly from it if it is built.
