Around 1,200 dental workers volunteered their services for a Mission of Mercy dental event in Cedar Rapids, Iowa last month.

The clinic provided care for more than 1,500 patients and volunteers gave away almost a million dollars worth of dental treatment. Cedar Rapids was chosen to host the event, as many people are still struggling to rebuild their lives following severe flooding. Dr Tom Grimes, chairman of the Iowa Mission of Mercy Local Steering Committee, said that the event was a means of helping people in Cedar Rapids and providing support for the local community.

The Mission of Mercy charity hosts free dental events all over America; it was founded to make dental treatment accessible for poorer people and those who struggled to find affordable dental care.

The Iowa Mission of Mercy free dental event runs every year; this year, organisers were expecting a greater turnout than ever before, as an increasing number of people are struggling to afford dental care. Free dental clinics are becoming increasingly popular, due to families living on restricted budgets, economic difficulties caused by the global recession and a rise in unemployment.
