why is the reason for the dentist to take x ray?

Q. I went for a six monthly check up and the dentist took two x-rays as well, I did not ask as to why he was doing this but for what reasons would they be taken?

A. X-rays are a vital part of an examination enabling the dentist to check for decay under fillings as well as the position of the bone that supports the teeth.
