What could be the cause of holes under my fillings?
Q.
After a visit to the dentist i was told that i have holes under my fillings. Is this possible. The dentist thinks that the filling material is failing (the fillings have been in for about 7 to 8yrs). The dentist took some x rays and said we shall monitor the situation in 6 months. I have no pain. What is the cause of this?

A.
Yes this is possible and frequently seen in practice. It is referred to as marginal decay and occurs due to leakage around the filling as it undergoes corrosion or shrinkage. If such findings are confirmed then replacement restoration should be planned without delay. All fillings will require replacement eventually.
