Tongue thrust is causing my front teeth to separate

Q. Hi There, I have a tongue thrust, and it is causing my two front teeth to separate in an upside down V. This is concerning to me because I wore braces for 4 years (about 7 years ago) and did speech therapy to re-train my tongue. I have a night guard that I wear although not regularly because it is uncomfortable, despite that it is in rest that the pushing occurs. Would veneers be a viable option to correct this cosmetically, while continuing to wear a guard at night?

A. Yes veneers might help but you’ll need a new reatiner to stop them moving

Hi, I also think I have a tongue thrust. I’m 19 and I’m about to have double jaw surgery in a months time to correct an open bite and under bite. My orthodontist and surgeon haven’t mentioned anything about me having a tongue thrust problem and I didn’t even know what it was until I read about it on someones blog and then researched it online. My toungue rests between my teeth, and I read about the characteristics of someone who swallows with a tongue thrust problem, and the description matched to how I swallow. Also I push my tongue to the front of my mouth in order to say certain letters. Do you think after surgery (my top jaw will be moved 2/3 mm forwards and my bottom jaw 6mm back) the tongue thrust won’t be an issue? Or will it push my teeth back into the old bite? Will I need speech therapy?
I tried some of the exercises I’ve seen online but my tongue feels like it literally won’t fit in the roof of my mouth and if I force it up there it gets all crumpled up and folded over! So I can’t do them.
