teeth whitening kit has given me sensitive teeth

Q. I bought a tooth whitening kit from a private dental surgery and explained that I had very sensitive teeth beforehand. He checked my teeth and said they would be fine and that I should purchase Tooth mousse. I used it once and haven’t been able to use it again as I was in agony. No amount of sensitive toothpaste helped. I really want them whitening but can’t suffer that for 2 weeks. My own dentist tells me that due to prolonged smoking, I have a mild case of gum recession and possibly my nerves may be exposed. How can I whiten them without the pain? I bought daywhite. 2hours was too long and it should have been on longer. Help, I have stopped smiling because of the colour of my teeth, although my dentist says they are still very healthy.

A.

Some systems do claim to whiten without sensitivity. In my experience there are none that whiten predictably without some patients getting sensitivity.
Keep your whitening trays and continue to use with the tooth mousse instead of daywhite , an alternative product to use in the trays is GELKAM ( Colgate ) try to keep in overnight for max effect.
Some patients retry after 6-12 months having used above products for a few weeks before restarting also you can swop materials (daywhite for nitewhite / carbamine peroxide )
if you dont want to retry whitening ultrathin veneers such as lumineers or thineers which dont require tooth reduction are an option. Cost per tooth is around £600, 6-10 upper front teeth , 8-10 lower front teeth
