Do crowns wear on the inside over time?

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009
Q.
I have 4 crowns in the front (top) I just noticed as I was flossing today the area I thought had food seems to be more like a wearing of the side of the crowns (2). Does this happen and what do you do about it besides new crowns. I know–go to the dentist. I have had them approximately 17-20 years. Thank you

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009
Q.
Hi, i have a tiny bit of black/brown on 2 bottom teeth in 1 corner of each teeth – the area that meets the gum. I brush my teeth twice daily, use mouth wash twice daily and floss a few times a week. Is this tartar build up? or something else? Thank you

Are dental implants a permanent alternatives for missing or removed teeth?

Saturday, August 29th, 2009
Q.
Hello, I was suffering from toothache a month or so ago – caused by an abscess, which in turn was caused by gum decease. Although I brush, floss and use mouthwash regularly; like many people: if it isn’t a problem, I don’t go to the dentist. And in my case, I hadn’t been to a dentist in over 20 years. I’ve been told that I’ll probably require a bridge… The thought of having to remove a false tooth for cleaning fills me with dread! If I have to have the tooth removed – and because it’s in a prominent place (lower front) are there any ‘permanent’ alternatives… ie. Fix and forget?

Is there a way to give a new tooth within hours?

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009
Q.
Hi, Im 21 and I have had a root filling in my front tooth a while ago, which made it appear discoloured, i then decided to get my teeth whitened, before the treatment i asked my dentist if the whitening would work on the root filled tooth as this was the main reason for the treatment, he said he would whiten the tooth from the inside and fill it again, after doing this i went back for a follow up appointment where he replaced the filling again and added more whitening treatment, my tooth felt very thin after this that i didnt even think he had filled it yet, when i mentioned it felt very hollow he said he had filled it. On a 3rd follow up appointment he was going to replace the filling again until i mentioned i thought the whiteness of the tooth appeared “grainy” again, he THEN suggested getting a crown and to go away and think about it. Shouldnt this have been suggested in the beginning? I then noticed a crack appearing in my tooth from the inside and today while brushing my teeth the tooth has cracked off completely. I’m so upset as it looks awful. Is there something the dentist could do straight away as i couldnt face going into work with no tooth. thanks.

How long would Ive to be without teeth before I can go with dentures?

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009
Q.
Dear Dr. Caplan, I am 34 years old and used to have fantastic teeth (needed my first ever filling when I was 18), but for some reason within the last 5 years my teeth have pretty much rottened/crumbled away. I’ve been told by a dentist that this is due to chewing a lot of sugary gum. I have continously been undergoing several treatments (6 extractions, root canal, crowns etc.) but it seems to have just worsened the situation. Whatever crowns get put on my teeth seem to come apart withing a couple of months damaging more of what little tooth is left. I am now at a point of considering having what is left extracted and wearing dentures. could you give me your opinion (pros/cons) on this as I am getting very conflicting advice. Also do you know how long I would have to be without any teeth until I can wear dentures? Many thanks

How come that the tooth under the crown can become bad?

Monday, August 10th, 2009
Q.
I got in September 2007 a tooth crown. After 2 years the crown got loose and I went back to the dentist. The dentist removed the crown and told me the tooth is bad and the tooth broken inside the crown, so that the crown come loose. But how come that the tooth become bad, when he got cleaned completely before the crown get placed over. Because under the crown a tooth can normally not get bad. Please, I hope you can answer the question: Is the dentist to blame and I have to pay for the repair? Because I think a crown most hold at least 10 years and not just 2 years. I can understand if the glue is not very strong, then the crown can get loose. Thanks a lot.
