I Have Very Little Enamel On My Teeth, Can There Really Be Nothing Done To Make Them Straight And White?

Thursday, September 19th, 2013
Q.

Hi, Dr Shaffie. My mum was ill when she was pregnant with me and the medication she took made my adult teeth come through with very little enamel on them. My dentist told me there was nothing that could be done to make them white. I had braces when I was a teenager but I was told that my jaw needed breaking for the teeth to stay straight and my dentist said that wiring my jaw shut meant my teeth wouldn’t get the proper cleaning they needed and because of my lack of enamel and they’d rot. So now I’m stick with yellow crooked teeth. Is there really nothing that can be done? I would literally do anything to have lovely straight white teeth. I really hope you can help me with this. Thank You.

How Do I Get My Overcrowded Mouth And Small Jaw Fixed?

Friday, May 3rd, 2013
Q.

Hi,

I have had problems with my teeth since around 14, but could never afford surgery or braces. I am now 28 and have trouble closing my mouth as my teeth are overcrowded and my lower jaw looks too small (like my jaws did not widen properly when I was growing). I can breathe through my nose if I use my tongue to close the gap, but cannot do this with my lips, as the teeth get in the way. I had all 4 wisdom teeth pulled 3 years ago, but my teeth were already crowded by this point and have just continued to push out forwards rather than sideways. If I push out my lower jaw, my face looks much more ‘normal’, which is why I think the lower jaw may the the issue. But how would I go about getting this corrected? Or should I just get a chin implant at my age rather than go through a year or so of braces and surgery to widen the jaw? I am not signed up to a dentist at present (recently moved home), and have no idea where to start or what I would need to do. I am also very short of time due to work commitments, hence the question about a chin implant rather than jaw/teeth surgery. What would you suggest? I know what I want as the end result, but have no idea what my options are, how much it would cost or where I would need to go? I live near Bath, Somerset if that makes any difference. Many thanks.

Can I Get My Overbite Fixed Without Having My Jaw Broken?

Wednesday, March 27th, 2013
Q.

Hello i ve been searching the internet for other options on jaw alignment. When i went through my treatment with the orthodontist to straighten my teeth they told me that my bottom jaw was about 1 cm behind my top jaw causing a very noticable overbite which i am not happy with and is affecting my confidence. They told me about this and said easiest and quickest way to fix this was to have fixed braces top and bottom to align my teeth and then after have my bottom jaw broken and moved forward. I really want to sort this problem out but i dont like the idea of this option and hope you know of any other options that could possibly work for me. I think i would get what ever treatment free because im only 17 and still get free NHS treatment until 18 or 19.
Cheers any advice will be great.

My Overbite Is Quite Severe, Can I Go Straight For Jaw Breaking Option Without Braces First?

Thursday, March 14th, 2013
Q.

Hello.
I have an overbite but it’s like quite severe. My bottom teeth are straight and my top teeth are pretty much straight aswel. I have trouble with eating and speaking normally sometimes and since I am a teenager it is starting to put a real downer on my social life as I’m sure you can imagine. My confidence is getting knocked everytime I look in the mirror so I guess you could call it a severe problem for me. Since beginning to look at my options I have become slightly confused. I have been to a consultant and he said that the only option is to break my jaw but it will take a couple of years, I am 15, 16 in may. He also said that I would need braces first for about a year.
I was just wondering if it was possible to do this without having braces and just break my jaw? Also how long this procedure would take and how much it would cost? Thanks
