What Should I Do If My Tooth Is Darker Than The Rest

Friday, January 25th, 2013
Q.

I have a dark front tooth after root canal following a blow to the face. My dentist who does not specialise in cosmetics does not want to do internal bleaching as she said the original work was done so well she can’t see the filling. I don’t want an implant or crown as the tooth is in good condition and my dentist is nervous of a veneer as she doesn’t know if the darkness will show through. The original work was done 2 years ago and some days the tooth is darker then others (don’t know why this is) but I don’t believe it is going to get any darker are there any other option

How can I get rid of my black gum line?

Friday, October 19th, 2012
Q.

Hiya, I chipped my front tooth 5 years ago and had root canal treatment on it and they then filled my tooth up but it started going black so my dentist suggested a crown. From day one my crown has had a black line above it and my gum area above my tooth is black. I had fluid coming out of my gum so I went to see my dentist which referred me to a dental school in Aberdeen, they sent me back to my dentists and instructed him to take my crown off and leave it open and put a temporary crown on and redo root treatment. I had a new crown put on in august but my gum is still black. Can anything be done to get the dark colour away from my gum area? and why has it turned that colour?

Would MAC veneers be an option for my stained teeth?

Wednesday, September 26th, 2012
Q.

Hello Mark,

I would be very grateful for your advice.

I currently have ceramic pressed veneers on my two upper front teeth. I injured myself when I was young which deadened one of the front teeth and I had root canal treatment on it. It is grey in colour. I had veneers fitted to my two front teeth to get an even finish, and when the second tooth was prepped for the veneer it was found to be stained quite badly yellow. I’ve had these veneers for about two years and I think they look much better than no veneers at all, but wondered if there might be a better option for me.

I have previously been advised that crowns would be the next step, but I would prefer veneers if possible.

Do you think that MAC veneers would be an option, and if so could they be placed on just my two front teeth to conceal the grey/yellow discolouration and would they be able to blend in with my remaining teeth?

Your help is much appreciated.

My tooth has turned black after brace treatment, what can I do?

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011
Q.

Dear Dr. Hughes,

After I got my braces put on 4 years ago my right front tooth turned gray/black at the top. My dentist told me that It lost blood flow and was dying. He said I must have had some tooth injury as a child where it was damaged, and with the braces moving it, it lost its blood flow completely. I do not recall any tooth injury as a kid but that was my dentists best guess. I had a root canal but it is still very dark. Now my braces are off and it is very dark and embarrassing. Will it fall out? What are my options to get it fixed? The dentist I used said it was an osteopathic tooth death. I am afraid if I pay to get a crown, it will then fall out and so I do not want to get a crown if there is a chance it will fall out anyway. Also it sometimes has a weird sensation, not necessarily pain but I can feel the tooth and it isn’t pleasant. I do not smile now and I really want it fixed with the best possible outcome. Thank you so much!

Is bleaching and veneers the best option for my discoloured tooth?

Tuesday, August 16th, 2011
Q.

I banged and cracked my front tooth when I was about 9. I have had a root filling in it since then. Over the years and especially more recently it has become quite dark and discoloured. I have been told that this is internal. My dentist suggested I had a composite veneer and gave me an idea of what it would look like. I was quite happy with the idea. This dentist then left and my new dentist said that a veneer might not be enough and that I should have internal bleaching and then a veneer. I have read that sometimes bleaching doesn’t work and also composite veneers only last a year or two. I do not have a lot of money but do want to improve the look of this tooth, but I would like advice as to what would be the best value for money long term.

Friday, November 12th, 2010
Q.
Hi, I had a root canal on my front tooth after a sports injury in August. My dentist is trying internal bleaching (approx 3 times now), The colour improves and then goes darker again. I really want to keep my tooth. Are there any alternatives to internal bleaching or should we just keep trying?! Thanks,

Is there a chance my root canal could fail in the long run, would veneers stress my teeth and does dentist experience really matter?

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010
Q.
Hello Dr Caplan I had root canal on one of my front tooth in Jan this year, and unfortunatlly it had gone grey. I went to a cosmatic dentist who suggested 2nd root canal, internal bleaching and porcelain crown for this tooth. At the same time I was interested in getting 3 vaneers put on my other 3 front teeth to achieve max cosmatic result. So my questions are.. 1) Is there a likelyhood for me to lose my grey tooth down the road after all these treatment s?! 2) does having the vaneers done on my other teeth “stress” the teeth?! Could it result in root canal afterward?! 3) I had been to couple cosmatic dentist. One is very well known and has lots of experience.. however he also charges 3 times what other dentist charges… Do you think that experience and techniques play a big part of the successof my teeth or is it more like chances ?! (losing my grey tooth or not down the road) thank you,

Are Lumineers appropriate for my dark teeth, or can I go with my preferred choice of internal bleaching?

Friday, October 29th, 2010
Q.
Dr. Bohara: I had an injury to top front tooth. I had a root canal & internal bleaching. The bleaching lasted a couple of years. The tooth has turned dark again. I have a new dentist this time who is recommending a lumineer. I asked her what she thought about another internal bleaching, but she said they frequently don’t last. She also said the lumnineer would be warranteed for 5 years. My insurance company has agreed to pay for the lumineer, but won’t pay for the bleaching. Yet, I’m concerned about having my tooth surface sanded down when it looks perfectly fine as is. What would you recommend?,
