I Don’t Want My Son To Have Work On His Healthy Teeth. Are There Any Less Extreme Options?

Thursday, September 26th, 2013
Q.

My son has Hypodontia. He is 16 years old and has completed his orthodontic work. He’s too young for implants and doesn’t want a denture. His clinic has recommended bridges but my dentist says it involves some work on healthy teeth which worries me. My dentist says he will keep work to the healthy teeth to a minimum. He’s entitled to NHS treatment but I understand that private materials, etc, are superior. Any advice would be most welcome!

I am 23 years old and still have milk teeth, I am worried, what should I do?

Q.

Dear Sunita,

I’m 23 and I still have two milk teeth near the front of my mouth, I read your answer in response to a previous question regarding hypodontia and was wondering if I fall into this category?

Also, with only two milk teeth would I be entitled to dental implants on the NHS? The reason I ask is that one tooth is beginning to feel uncomfortable and as if it is escaping from the gum line, this is also making the upper teeth catch on it and I am very worried to bite on this tooth in case it just falls out!

My dentist has mentioned these milk teeth to me on many occasions and when I ask him what my options are, his answer is always the same ‘they may fall out in your 20s or your 50s, you will lose them eventually’. However my dentist has never mentioned the possibility of implants, even though I have mentioned the problems I have with them to him. Should I start looking for a new dentist? The issue is really depressing and is really affecting my life.

Thank you in advance for your answer!

I have Hypodontia and I am in need of dental treatment. Can you make any recommendations for me go achieve good aesthetics?

Q.

Hi,
I have severe Hypodontia, and I have 16 adult teeth and 5 milk teeth. I currently have a ‘sticky bridge’ on either side of my top central teeth. The gum above these is starting to turn a pale grey. I have regular dental check-ups and nothing has been said, I’m just wondering if this is normal or if i will need treatment of some sort?
Also, because of my lack of bone in the lower jaw, I haven’t enough bone for any implants later on (I’m seventeen) I would just like to know if there is any other treatments you would recommend to enable me to eat properly and to receive good aesthetics?
