I have Hypodontia and I am in need of dental treatment. Can you make any recommendations for me go achieve good aesthetics?

Q.
Hi,
I have severe Hypodontia, and I have 16 adult teeth and 5 milk teeth. I currently have a ‘sticky bridge’ on either side of my top central teeth. The gum above these is starting to turn a pale grey. I have regular dental check-ups and nothing has been said, I’m just wondering if this is normal or if i will need treatment of some sort?
Also, because of my lack of bone in the lower jaw, I haven’t enough bone for any implants later on (I’m seventeen) I would just like to know if there is any other treatments you would recommend to enable me to eat properly and to receive good aesthetics?
A.
Dear Enquirer,
Hypodontia patients are among the few to fall into NHS provision of dental implants through dental hospitals, so this is probably something you may want to follow up on. You may receive better care in this case as dental hospitals can cater very well for patients that present with this condition as they are able to liase effectively between the different dental departments, implants, restorative etc.
I hope this helps,
Sunita

Hi, I’m 22 years old and I have the same condition. I’m left with 13 teeth in total and I’ve suffered a lot of hassle over the past 15 years. I am currently going through a maxillo facial unit at my local hospital, who are currently working with an orthodontic unit in the same hospital. I also have a think bone profile on my lower gums, and have been told that due to the implications of bone grafting and re-working nerve endings in my lower jaw, implants in this area may not be an option. However, they are currently applying for funding to begin orthodontic and eventually implant work on my upper teeth. Although the funding isn’t guaranteed, they do treat every case as individual, and alternatives to implants may be offered if the funding is declined. I understand what you’re going through as it’s hard to know where to turn and what questions to ask, but I suggest you take the first step by asking for a ref feral to your local orthodontic unit from your GP or dentist. I hope this helps, best of luck.

Hi,

Im 27 yrs old, I also suffer from hypodentia, i have 9 missing teeth, I was told that my lower Jaw would not support implants unless I I had grafting done. I had my treatment done (12yr to 20) under the supervision of a consultant called Gary Pollock, it was completed at Queen Marys university dental school. I currently have a 4 tooth bridge, and another 3 single bridges as well as build up work over some of my stronger milk teeth. I’m really happy with the work ive had done, it might be a good idea to ask your dentist to refer you to them. I am worried that once my bridges reach the end of there life, it will be extrememly expensive to have them replaced, or time consuming to go through the nhs. I have had a denture made privately, just incase my bridge at the front was to break, so im not left in the lurch.. I hope this has been helpful..
