Is It Worth Having My Front Teeth Crowned At The Age Of 75?

Monday, July 15th, 2013
Q.

Hi, I was wondering if you’d be kind enough to offer some advice? My 4 front teeth are quite discoloured, grey looking and I would like to have them capped but I know this is very expensive. I am 75 and wonder if it would really be worth it! Also I am very worried about the pain that the injection for the anesthetic would cause as basically I am a coward with a fear of needles. My second tooth upper right is allready capped and has badly dicoloured over the years so that now it is a deep cream colour and badly shows up the grey teeth. Can you advise as to cost and whether I should have the treatment? I just want it fixing so I can smile properly again, I don’t think age should be a factor in this but I’m not sure. Thanks for your time.

I’m Not Happy With My Treatment, What Should I Do?

Friday, January 18th, 2013
Q.

Please give me some advise. I had to finally have some crowns replaced and decided to have cosmetic work also. It was very important to me to keep a natural looking smile I wanted to keep my two front teeth longer and wanted at least the same white as before. my teeth were all cemented in on top and the 2 front teeth were too short. also, I thought the color looked grey – I did not like the way they looked. After complaining he redid the front 2 teeth – said they made a mistake and they were too short. I decided to go ahead and do the 6 veneers in the front bottom . I am ok with them as they seem brighter and prettier than the crowns on top. yesterday I finally had the nerve to call and talk to the dentist. He said he would get back with me once his computers were back up. I still have not heard from him. I am making myself sick and keep looking in the mirror – they just seem dull and almost grey. I have paid over 40,000 – please tell me what to do.

How natural-looking will veneers from the NHS be?

Monday, August 22nd, 2011
Q.

Dear Dr Rob,

I had root canal treatment on my two front teeth around 2 years ago. I had them internally bleached but they appear greyish now. I am having the two front teeth veneered on the nhs but I am still having my doubts.

My main concern was when I asked my dentist if they would look natural or similar to my natural teeth and she said no they wouldn’t look like my natural teeth because it is just the front two teeth I’m having done and it can be difficult to match them exactly but she said she would try to match the colour as close as possible. I understand the nhs have limitations on what they can offer in regards to veneers and I’m glad she was honest with me. But I’m so worried. Are my teeth really going to look very fake and obvious?!

Do you think I could ask her if I could be referred to another nhs dentist who has more experience with veneers?

Also how much of the tooth should be shaven down? My dentist said about 1mm. But I’ve read for porcelain veneers they shave down 0.5mm. Or does that depend on the patient’s teeth? I do have quite large front teeth that stick out a little which leaves me with permantly parted lips. Do you think the veneers will make this worse and make my teeth look bulky?

I’d love to get them done privately but as a student I really can’t afford £450 per tooth.

Many thanks

My daughter’s tooth is grey, can teeth whitening help?

Monday, June 6th, 2011
Q.

Dear Dr I recently asked the following question Q. One of my 15 year old daughter’s front teeth is dark grey. Her dentist says it is as a result of bleeeding inside the tooth, but it is still alive and recommended tooth whitening (smile-x) on just that one tooth. The tooth is not stained; the discolouration has happened inside of the tooth and so I don’t see how whitening the outside of the tooth will help. Is there any method of possibly whitening the inside of the tooth? I do not want her to have veneers. What is your opinion? Thank you for your time.
A. You cannot have internal bleaching on a tooth that has not had root canal treatment. I recommend you have this tooth x-rayed and ask your dentist to do a pulp test. If the reason for the tooth discolouration is internal bleeding, the tooth is definately dead. In this case it need to have a Root Canal, you then can try internal bleaching.

Thank you very much for your reply.

Our dentist says the discolouration must be as a result of a knock, possibly some years before. However, my daughter has never fallen or hit that tooth. It was the same colour as all her other teeth before orthodontic treatment started and the discolouration only became apparent the day her fixed retainers were removed. During treatment, following tightening of the retainers, she often had pain for a few days and also experienced occasional bleeding around the gum line in that area. Could it be the orthodontic treatment itself that caused this problem?

The dentist has x-rayed the tooth and tested it by blowing cold air on it. I am not sure whether a pulp test was done, but the dentist assures me that the tooth is not dead and that a root canal is not necessary. Therefore I presume that internal bleaching is not an option. I am suspicious that the whitening suggested by our dentist would just make the tooth look a brighter grey and possibly show up even more. Also, the dentist said she would have to do this treatment every two months for the rest of her life, which is quite a daunting commitment for someone so young.

I would very much appreciate any advice you could give me. Thank you.

Why is my daughter’s tooth turning grey?

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010
Q.
My daughter damaged her front teeth 2 years ago. At the time she went to hospital where the dentist pushed a tooth which had been dislodged back into place. Now this tooth is turning grey. Is there anything that can be done to prevent this happening further and to restore her natural tooth colour? Thank you Regards.
