Q.

hi there, i would like some advice regarding dental treatment. here is my story, when i was a young man i was a regular visitor to the dentist, but as ive got older they have become less frequent, the reason for this is, as i was growing through my teens, i started having anxiety attacks, and whislt at the dentists i had on, i felt as though i couldnt breath with all the hands in my mouth, and i was gagging all the time feeling as thi i was choking. its embarrasing as i have a boken molar , and that is weeping blood, and my breath is smelly, but even tho im a 39 year old man i feel shaky at the thought of visiting a dentist, ive been looking at sedation dentisrty i would be very gratefull if you could tell me more about it. many thanks

I have bad breath, why?

Thursday, March 10th, 2011
Q.

Hi, i have been suffering with bad breath for about ten years. I recently went to my dentist and he said that my teeth were fine. I then went to my doctor who said to see a dentist. In both cases no tests were carried out. It is a hugely embarrassing problem and my question is where do i go and what do i say to get the help i need? I do not smoke, have impeccable oral hygiene and eat a balanced diet. I have a bad taste in the back of my throat and have tried some of the most popular products for stopping bad breath but to no avail. Thanks

I get bad breath in the morning and when drinking alcohol. I do many of the suggested things to stop it but it remains. Can you advise?

Hi,

I have a few questions with regards to halitosis or bad breath for which I have scoured the internet for an answer but as yet have not found a satisfactory response. I have a specific situation at present which I am struggling to control. Firstly my halitosis is not chronic and for much of the time is not a problem. The only time I seem to have a problem is first thing in the morning or when I drink alcohol. Most of the time I still have a white coating at the back of my tongue and I used to automatically associate this with bad breath but it seems that this is not always the case. Is that correct? Is there anything I can do to remove this as I find it quite unsightly.

Now I didn’t used to have this problem but I believe that some time in my mid to late twenties (I am now 32) I had gingivitis. The reason that I think this is I have some reduction of my gums around a couple of my teeth. This went undetected for a number of years as I didn’t suffer any bleeding and my gums appeared healthy. However after a friend told me that I had malador from my mouth whilst we were having a drink I decided to visit a dentist. There they diagnosed gum disease and changed my whole oral routine. Whereas I used to just brush twice a day with a manual toothbrush I now brush twice a day with an electric toothbrush, floss daily, use a tongue scraper and use mouthwash twice a day (used to be dentyl but I have just changed to retardex). I also now drink much more water daily (anything from 4-6 pints) as well as eating fresh fruit daily (is it true that apples and bananas have a negative effect on one’s breath?) It is now 5 or 6 months since I first saw the dentist and my breath has definitely got better with my new oral hygiene. As mentioned though I still suffer with morning breath to some degree (it is not as bad as it has been in the last few years but nowhere near as good as it used to be up to my mid to late twenties) and I still produce a bad smell from my mouth when I drink alcohol. As my gum disease has cleared up my dentist has advised me to consult my doctor or an ear, nose and throat specialist as they say that there is no reason why I should have any kind of malador at all now. Is this correct or is there a possibility that this smell that I cannot get rid of is the legacy of gingivitis which went untreated? Furthermore is there anything I can do get rid of it? I long to be able to kiss my girlfriend in the morning or go out with friends again for a quiet drink. These are things that I’ve had taken away from me which I desperately want back.

I apologise for the number of questions, if it is your policy not to answer so many questions then I understand. However any advice, help or direction would be greatly, greatly received.

Many thanks

I have really bad teeth and am too scared to go back

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010
Q.
I have really bad teeth and am too scared to go back to the dentists. My last visit was about 5 years ago just before my youngest daughter was diagnosed with a life limiting condition and I hate to say it but I neglected my own health and teeth while looking after her. I now have a rotting tooth right at the front plus many other problems – I lived on fizzy drinks to give me energy and smoked 10 cigarettes a day for stress and am now paying the price. What can I do to sort them out? Where can I go where I won’t be looked at in disgust? Really sad and depressed about this and the amount of time I spend worrying about this should be spent with my daughter but I just don’t know what to do….,

I have always had terrible oral hygiene and I am now paying the price. What kind of treatment can I have to get my confidence back?

Monday, August 9th, 2010
Q.
I have always had terrible oral hygiene since a child because I refused to brush my teeth. I am now 21 years old and I am now starting to pay the price. My front tooth has a big chip in it, the next tooth has a huge chip behind it, I’ve recently lost half of of a premolar and I’ve had to remove a molar for also losing half of it. My teeth are also very off-coloured , I have black stuff just where the tooth meets the gum, my bottom gums are starting to get a little black growing on it and I have terrible breath. I really want my smile back so I can meet girls again and be happy without feeling embarrassed about my hygiene. What kind of treatment would I have to undertake to fix my rotting teeth and bad breath?,

Will I need to have my wisdom teeth removed if other options aren’t working?

Monday, August 2nd, 2010
Q.
My wisdom teeth on the bottom have come in impacted. Often the gum around them swell and despite paying special attention to them with a small brush when brushing and using corsodyl gel on them there is a bad smell. I can only really smell this if I press my finger on the gum around the tooth. I am concerned that I may need my wisdom teeth removed. Can you advise? Thanks.,

Did procedure lead to these new problems?

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

Hi, Just before Xmas i had a tooth prepared for a Crown. My Dentist didnt place a temporary on as “your gum is a bit sore wont put temporary on to give it time too heal”. What with the Xmas period and not having the money to pay the remaining balance I went back 5 weeks later to have the Crown fitted. When I went back the Dentist said “just going to remove the temporary”. I told her she never put one on and she did seem slightly surprised. She’d obviously forgot she’d not put one on… Sorry this is long winded..Now i have sensitivity to hot and cold and have an awful taste and smell coming from that area. Is this because the crown doesnt fit properly as my teeth shifted from not having a temporary on? That is a guess but obviously I would value yr professional opinion. Please help as iv’e paid £400 for this treatment and now have sensitivity and smelly breath that i didnt have before!!,
