Should I have an apicectomy or root canal treatment and replace old crown?

Q.
Hi
I was planning on having some cosmetic dental crown work re-done, but have discovered via x-rays that I have an infection around the tip of a previously root-filled crowned canine tooth. The dentist has suggested either an apicocectomy, or root canal and removal of old screw post/crown in this tooth and the one next to it, as this also has an old screw post, and the tip of its root is fairly close to the area of infection. Which would be the treatment of choice, please? I am concerned about the removal of the old posts (although I was going to have these teeth re-crowned anyway). thanks for your reply.

Hi – good questions

My advice would be that you get a specialist in root canal treatment to first assess the suitability of having these teeth re-treated or surgically treated, before attempting to dismantle any crowns and posts. Sometimes removing old posts can be very tricky and often the endodontist should be the person to carry this out, very carefully , working under a microscope. If they are confident of success than you could choose this path. I refer all my endodontic treatment to our own ‘in-house’ specialist

An alternative, and one you may to have consider now if the repeat treatment is not considered predictable or successful , would be to replace both teeth with implants and crowns on top of these. Have you considered or discussed that with your dentist?

I hope that helps

I may have to have an APACO procedure, I had a root canal and I am still having pain in the tooth. What does that procedure consist of?

I had an apicectomyabove a front tooth (a very painful and terrible experience). A week after, my dentist found that the root of my tooth had a vertical crack so it had to be removed. I nowhave a false tooth on a plate which I hate and am considering an implant. Can you give me any idea what the costs would be. My own dentists has a surgeon that performs them but I don’t know how experienced heis and his charge is quite high. It is very difficult to know the best place to go. Thank you for your help.

I have had many problems with my teeth and have broken and painful teeth which have resulted from a hereditory condition. I would like to remove theseteeth and replace as well as remodel my smile. I cannot afford to pay upfront, is it possible to work out a payment plan fro this treatment and provide an estimated quotation for the works? Many thanks
