Should I be concerned by Hydrogen Peroxide used in whitening systems?

Q.
Dear Dr

I had my teeth whitened at my dentist and she used the reputible company Voco system on me. I was concerned because i wasnt aware that Hydrogen Peroxide was used which is an acid…my question is why do dentists use an acid to whiten teeth? Do your teeth reminilize? I thought enamel didnt heal and i found out that the PH used was 4 and this was in house for 20 mins is this bad? Im worried? Have i got a right to be?

Would appreciate your best advise thankyou for your time,

A.
Hi ,
What you have to remember that this is essentially a chemical reaction that breaks down to oxygen and water which is different from placing an acid which does not break down directly onto teeth.
That being said there are now a few systems coming on the market which are alkaline in nature.
The strength of the acid / concentration of peroxide is dependent on how the dentist is usingnit and what they aimed to achieve, and as with any chemical it’s the method of use that is important , if your dentist used it in the appropriate manner there will be no damage to the teeth that you need to be concerned about.
For the record I don’t consider the coco bleach to be a market leader and don’t favour anynpower in surgery whitening without some home whitening component if you want a true whiteningnwith a result that will last.
