Nhs treatment for crooked teath

Q. Im 24 and have really crooked teath. Im just wondering if it is possible to get them fixed on the NHS. It is my 4 front teeth at the top, and they stick out and are really wonky, but I dont think I could afford to get them done privatley.

A. The NHS uses a points score for orthodontics ( tooth straightening ). You would need to have healthy teeth before orthodontics so start with a check up at a normal dentist then ask for a referral to an NHS orthodontic practice.  to carrry out NHS orthodontics the dentist must have a special contract with the NHS most practices with these contracts do not do general dentistry and you need to be refferrred in.

hi, i have been battling teeth problems all my life. My brother also has the same problem and he had to have a big operation which entailed a head brace going through his skull to correct his jaw. My question is that, will i be able to have most of my teeth replaced (by any procedure) as I have a weird jaw too and tiny back teeth and it is quite embarassing when i eat as it looks like i am gurning and it is bringing me down. Would i be able to get this done on the NHS?

The points system for teeth straightening on the NHS is called the index of orthodontic treatment need (IOTN). Firstly NHS teeth straightening is only available to under 18s and even then the IOTN score must be 4 or above. The basic principle behind this is that the nhs only provide treatment if orthodontics is required for health reasons and not aesthetics. So I’m afraid at the age of 24 you would not qualify for nhs otrthodontic treatment. I would look at private options and perhaps monthly
Payment plans.
