My teeth are crooked and gums swollen

Q. My teeth are all in the wrong directions and the gums are really swollen and bigger than usual. I feel lack of confidence because i can\’t smile without having to cover my mouth with my hand. What do you suggest?

A. The problems of puffy gums is not uncommon with patients who have teeth which are not in the same direction. Generally due to the incorrect positions of the teeth, tufts of gums are formed and gums become further swollen since it is difficult to clean in between the teeth. There are a couple of ways to correct this and get your confidence back.

The first is orthodontics. Wearing braces can straighten the teeth and correct the position of the gums so that the swelling of the gums is reduced and you are able to clean in between the teeth.

The second option is having crowns and veneers to correct the position of the teeth with gum surgery to correct the swollen areas.

Both options will give you a much better result, but essentially choosing one over the other depends on your financial constraints and how long you wish to wait to get the final result!
