Is there a possibility for the gums to disintegrate due to cross bite?

Q. Hi there. I’m a 31 year old woman and I’ve recently changed dental practice. My new dentist suggested invisalign for my cross bite and overbite. I am interested in the procedure because as I’m getting older my teeth have become more crooked due to wisdom teeth coming through etc. One of the main reasons my dentist suggested the procedure is that some of my teeth don’t get adequate use because of the cross bite and that eventually the gums will disintegrate(not sure if that’s the right discription) causing my teeth to fall out. Could this be possible or is he trying to scare me into having it done? Thank you.

A. In most cases the argument is more about cosmetic concerns.
