Is it normal for the jaw area to be numb 3 days after surgery?

Q. My royal marine son has had his wisdom teeth extracted. 3 were removed with no problem but 1 had to be removed accessing the jaw. He has stitches and was put to sleep when this took place 3 days ago. he is now complaining of numbness in this area, How long can the numbness last as I read this is normal for afew days? Just to reassure him! Thankyou.,
A. Thank you for your enquiry. The local anaestehtic usually lasts just a few hours, but can last longer- even a couple of days. As it was a surgical extraction, I am assuming that you already have a review appointment in about a week with the dentist to see how things are healing. If not, I would recommend that you monitor it for a couple of more days and then return to your dentist to discuss any concewrns- the practicing dentist will the assess to see if there any underlying problems. Good Luck.
