Is it normal for a person to stop smoking and have their gums bleed more than before?

Q. I recently quit smoking and am noticing that my gums are becoming really pink where they use to be pale…I am assuming that is a good thing. My question is, is it normal for a person to stop smoking and have their gums bleed more than before, i didn’t have a problem with gums bleeding till I stopped smoking. Thank you,
A. Hi. Smoking is one of the main contributing factors in gum disease. Smoking decreases the blood flow in your gums which is why they appeared white. The problem with smoking is that it masks the signs- ie bleeding gums. When you stop smoking, the signs are no longer masked and this is why your gums bleed and apear more pink. I would recommend that you see your dentist and hygienist to stabilise the bleeding of your gums- as it can progress into periodontitis which in time may loosen you teeth. Hope this has helped.

My gums are bleeding during the night while im asleep. Also bleed a lot when I brush my teeth. I take Multivitim tablets with Iron. Could the Iron be the cause

I would suggest you make an appointment to see the Dentist and they might refer you to see a Dental Hygienist.
