Im nervous and worried about the contamination of dental equipment and cross infection

Q. Dear Dr, I am a very nervous patient and avoid the dentist at all costs. I have some pain in a tooth with a temporary filling (I never returned to get the proper filling put in). I know I need to go to the dentist but I am very worried about contamination of dental equipment and cross-infection etc… My main concern is that the dental equipment won’t be properly sterilised and I am also worried that when the dentist moves his lamp and then puts his hands into my mouth he may transfer blood from a previous patient into my mouth. I have never seen him wipe the light after use, but he possibly does this when I have left the room. Should I tell the dentist my concerns? I am kind of embarrassed about this. Thanks

A.

The equipment is cleaned in between patients as you suspect. It is a good idea to let your dentist know about your worries so that they can guide you through the experience. Hopefully it will reduce the stress of the situation.
