If I have teeth taken out for orthodontic work will this change the shape of my face?

Q.
One of my upper front tooth is turned out and I was told I should remove my 2 upper bicuspids for braces. Ive seen someone who had this done and she had the appearance of a pushed in/smushed look. I was also told I have beautiful big teeth and when they become straight with braces, it will seem I have too much teeth for my mouth/jaw. I also have a strained look when I try to close my mouth or touch my lips together. I figured it was because of my turned out tooth but Ortho said it doesnt have anything to do with it. I dont want to change my profile or my smile, I just want straight teeth. Ortho said because I have big, beautiful teeth, it will only look fuller/bigger once they are straightened so I was told they can put the braces on and I can decide later when my teeth are straighter to pull them out if it does seem to be too much teeth. My question is, if I do decide to pull out the fangs after my teeth are straight, how much longer will I need to continue wearing the braces to close the gaps? How much of my smile/profile will change? Can the Dr decide how much to push it back or is it all or nothing once they are out? I hear a lot of people saying they regret pulling teeth out because it changes their smile/profile and they are unhappy with it.

Hi and thank you for your enquiry

These are great questions. I can only speculate on the correct approach for you without actually seeing you in person myself but there are a few things you should consider in order to find the right option for you.

It is not normal for the treatment to be carried out without extraction and then a new treatment plan to remove teeth done and then treatment continued – it would be normal to have the teeth removed and decided upon before the process begins. Any good orthodontist , experienced in ‘facially generated’ treatment planning, will know the answer to this question once they have examined you and your case.

So the key thing to get right is the choice of orthodontist as experience and skill in regards to this type of treatment approach is crucial.

If you need any recommendations let me know, our own orthodontists are experienced in this type of treatment planning, but please do some research and go for a couple of opinions before deciding on who to go with. Make sure you discuss all your concerns at the consultation(s)

Thanks so much for your reply. I’ve never heard of experienced’facially generated’ orthodontia. I’ve had another opinion and he recommended I pull 4 out. 2 uppers and 2 lowers. I’m not comfortable with that. Besides my concern for pulling teeth, Can you help me with other questions I will need to ask as I have no idea what it is I need to know as far as what their prices should include? He was charging me $4900 and I can’t remember what that includes but should there be something I will need to know?
Thanks again.
Erlinda
