I want a porcelain crown for a dead tooth that is discoloured

Q. I have a discoloured front tooth an xray has revealed that the nerve in this tooth is dead. My dentist nhs has suggested a crown but for some reason wasn’t to keen on a porcelain crown. I am worried that the crown will not look natural and very concerned about any dark joins can you offer any advise? many thanks

A. Porcelain crowns do look very natural because they allow the colour of the underlying tooth to come through . Obviously in your case this is not a great idea as you have a dark tooth. In this instance an all porcelain crown with an opaque inner core can be used – such as procera or lava crown. The other option is to have a metal based crown which is covered in porcelain. This can look very natural provided a highly skilled Dental technician makes it.
