I noticed a black line above my tooth and was told I have receding gums. What can I do?

Q.
I have just paid 7,000 pounds to have my top teeth improved with bridge work and porcelain veneers. Work was finished in aug I noticed few weeks ago a black line above tooth. When the hygienist looked she said my gum line is receding. She advised me to use sonic toothbrush nd to massage my gum with gauze in a downward motion. I feel absolutely sick that I need to look at this and it is noticeable when I smile. What can I do. Many thanks

The question to be asked is what is causing the black line.
It is either that the underlying tooth has been root filled and is darker than the other teeth hence this is showing through . Or that the material in the crown is metal reinforced and this is reflecting on the tooth , in which case an experienced cosmetic dentist would have prepared the tooth if it was an anterior below the gum margin, this is not so crucial on posterior teeth as the gum line is only evident when you brush and a higher line is easier to keep clean.

It could also be that your gums were inflamed when the teeth were prepared in which case they should not have been prepared till the gums were healthy.

Your oral hygiene would have to be really bad for your gum line to recede due to a disease process this quickly , with the only possible cause being excessive brushing traumatising the gum away
