I have had treatment for periodontal disease and gum recession

Q. I’ve recently had treatment for periodontal disease which involved deep cleaning below the gum line and a rigorous daily cleaning regime. I took the decision to go to a private dentist because my NHS dentist seemed to have missed the problem completely. After years of having no dental problems I now seem to have a major problem which has so far been fairly expensive and quite depressing. Whilst the bleeding has stopped and my gums are in a far better condition I have lost part of the gum next to my top front two teeth and have suffered a general gum recession. Some dentists simply say that there is nothing that can be done to regain the gum, then I read about gum and bone grafts and am wondering if this is likely to work for me as I feel the loss of the gum is unsightly and I feel that there is movement of my teeth. I\’ve also seen adverts for an American toothpaste product called OraMD (www.oramd.com), in fact on this site there is a link. Is this product simply a scam or have you actually heard of it and would it be worth trying ? Any advice you can provide would be appreciated.

A. Thank you for your question. Gum recession is completely ususal after having treatment for gum disease, it is a sign thst the gums are becoming healthy. The amount of recession will depend on the severity of the condition in the first place. The teeth may feel loose if you have lost bone from around your teeth. Teeth can be splinted together with fibre at the back of the teeth so they feel more solid. Gum grafts are possible. They work best when there is no or only a small amount of gum attachment and bone loss inbetween the teeth. I haven’t heard of the product you mentioned. I haven’t ever heard of anything that will restore gum tissue. You can take vitamin C to make them stronger because it is a vital component of the collagen in gum tissue. My advice to you would be to find a periodontist (gum specialist) to find out whether you are suitable to have a gum graft and then if you are unhappy with the appearance of your teeth seek out a restorative and cosmetic dentist and you will have a great smile.
I hope I have helped
Kind Regards
